The Paulus Hook Neighborhood...
was originally part of a tract of land purchased by Michael Pauw, an Amsterdam Burgomaster and Lord of Achttienhoven in 1630. The property contained a large amount of fertile land, some of which was an area that became known as "Paulus Hook".

From early Dutch attempts at settlement (1630-1664), several settlements developed on the western shores of the Hudson River. They were Pavonia, Communipaw, Harsimus, Paulus Hook and Bergen and were eventually incorporated into the municipality of Jersey City.

After the forfeiture of land holdings at Pavonia by Michael Pauw in 1633, the Dutch West India Company named Michael Paulusen, or Paulaz, an agent for the Pavonia settlement. It is from his name that the name Paulus, and sometimes Powles, Hook is derived for the original area. The word hoeck in Dutch means hook or point, thus Paulus Hook.
